Buffy and Bill, a couple of youthful seniors in their mid 70’s, traveled from our neighboring community of Port Blandfort for the half hour drive to Clarenville. Their goal was simple, they wanted to participate in the Clarenville Area Recreation Associations (CARA) ‘Drop in Curling’ session at the Eastlink Events Center where stadium ice is converted two mornings a week to Curling ice. The ‘Drop in’ session is a chance for individuals of all ages to experience the joy of curling along with the socialization and physical activity that the sport provides.
Buffy and Bill were novice curlers however Buffy had done a ‘Learn to Curl’ program in Halifax a few years back. They were keen and their names went up on the board as all names do during each session. Following some brief but informative instructions on rock delivery, sweeping, skips calls and scoring they were off to the races and enjoying their time at the rink. Following a few weeks of Thursday curling, they recently decided that they wanted to play in the Legionnaire’s Curling session on Tuesday and now are a part of that Curling group also. Buffy and Bill are enthusiastic and are among the first people to arrive at the rink each session!
With each game, they are improving their shot making and their knowledge of this wonderful sport improves each day!
Congratulations Buffy and Bill, wishing you both lots of curling in years to come!
