For the love of ... Curling - Curling Day In Canada

It is said that curling is a sport that is inclusive and can be played by people of all ages and abilities. So, what has kept me curling for over 70 years? Let’s be honest, at 93, it requires much more effort and determination to play than it did in my twenties. I now require special equipment to maintain my balance on the ice. And it’s even more important now that I do stretching exercises regularly and take daily walks to keep me mobile and fit.
It’s the love for the game and my commitment to continuous improvement that keeps me motivated in curling. More importantly, it’s the bonds formed with my teammates and fellow club members that keeps me playing, no matter if we win or lose. I’m happy to share tips and strategies with beginner players or even regular ones, and I always enjoy a few laughs with friends. Some often tease me that I often hit the ice with the enthusiasm of a teenager! At the start of a game, when they ask what colour stone I want, I always reply “Red”. When I tell the new players to look at the number 7 red stone, they are always surprised to see my name on it. I always get a chuckle. I was awarded this stone in 2022 by the New Horizons Seniors Curling Club at the McIntyre Arena in Timmins, Ontario, for my many years of dedication to curling. It’s still an honour to have been recognized, and I now have an Honorary Lifetime membership with the Club. All this just proves that age is just a number when you’re doing what you love
