Our town motto is “Small Community, Big Heart”. Our curling rink is supported by our small town and surrounding farming community. Year round it is the local coffee shop, and post (senior) walking group meeting place. In the winter we run men’s, ladies, seniors, mixed, drop-in and junior leagues out of our rink. In the summer we convert the ice surface to shuffle board for local seniors in the area. When provincial Covid-19 restrictions eased to allow curling in the fall of 2021 we returned to our rink with heavy hearts as our president Colin Crockatt had passed away from cancer in August of 2021. Although we were happy to be able to get together as a community back at the curling club once again, it was very hard as he was such a staple at the rink and his presence was missed immensely. As the season progressed the restrictions continued to fluctuate, one of our younger members (Riley Buchanan) came up with the idea for glow curling. The Buchanan family took the idea and ran with it. We then set up our rink to glow, and had a mixed/open glow bonspiel in February of ’22. Since then our rink has made continued improvements on our glow curling set up. Now even our ice surface glows! It has become a draw in the area for rink rentals, as well as bonspiels. Glow curling has been a fun way to introduce people to the game of curling, with great interest from juniors and ladies who have never curled before. Ladies Bonspiels in the past ten years had dwindling numbers (6-8 teams), the Ladies Glow Bonspiel this year was a one day event to make it more accessible for moms to come out and have fun. The combination of having it a Glow Bonspiel and a one day event led to the best turn out in years, we had to cap the teams to 18 and even had a wait list! Setting our curling club up to Glow has really provided a new light in our community.
