I had been curling from time to time for the past 30 years in various communities I lived in and my family and I recently moved to Dawson City, Yukon. At the beginning of this year’s season, I attended the local curling club for an open night. This is where I met a lady named Kim who was curling by herself. She explained that she was inexperienced and was trying to put a team in for her place of work. We threw some rocks and I gave her some pointers. The following day, Kim was there again and told me that after discussion with her team, they asked if I could be their skip. I accepted and we begin playing together in a fun league. We put a team in the 123rd Dawson City International Bonspiel with two other beginners. Lets just say that we didn’t do so well winning only one game of the four we played. In January, we again put a team in a local 12 teams bonspiel, this time, picking up my wife who is also very inexperienced. We finished with a record of 4-0 and tied in first place of the Commercial bonspiel. In early February 2023, the curling rink held the 124th Dawson City International Bonspiel. With the same players, we were able to beat every team on our path and finished 1st out of 16 teams This is how a team comprised of a Cop, a Gold miner, a Human resource officer and an X-Ray technologist became the 124th Dawson City International Bonspiel Champions.
