My ol' friend Billie - Curling Day In Canada

Billie passed away a few years ago at the age of 92 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. He loved to golf in the Summer and curl in the Winter. His favorite part of both was after the game to go have a few beers. He played lead for me for 20 years. On Wednesday, he skipped a team in the Town and Country League. For all those years he was happy to throw in turns because he had a terrible time, for whatever reason, throwing an outturn. Alex was my third in the Men’s League and he also skipped a team in the Town and Country. One Wednesday, they played against each other. On the 4th end, Billie had the last rock. Alex was laying 7 when Billie went down to shoot. Alex’s lone rock not in the house was over on the right side, about 5 feet in front of the house. Billie went down, threw his rock with back ring weight and for some unknown reason, threw an outturn. He was very wide. His rock hit Alex’s rock outside the.house and (you guessed it) raised Alex’s rock into the house for an eight ender. OMG. Alex being the sportsman he is, replaced the guard, gave Billie his last rock, took it down to the other end and allowed Billie to throw it again. This time Billie threw an inturn, made a partial shot and Alex stole only four. True story.
