Schmirler the Curler - Curling Day In Canada

Sandra Schmirler (Schmirler the curler)….She is our favourite curling story. 1998….four years after our family emigrated to this glorious country, we proudly watched the Winter Olympic games held in Nagano for our first time. Coming from a country with a warm climate (We’ve only seen a snippet of snow, once, over a period of 33 years of living there); we had no idea what curling was. Sandra changed that for us. The first time curling for women at the Olympic games was a medal sports; with her as Skip…..team Canada won!! I remember vividly as she, Jan Betker, Joan McCusker and Marcia Gudereit jumped up, hands in the air, laughing, hugging, celebrating on the ice. We did the same in our living room. Through cheers and tears, that was it; we were hooked on this sport! She did it for us. We have not missed one major curling event since.
