Greatest Curling Fan

My mom, Laura Goss was a diehard curling and proud mom of the Silver Foxher son Glenn Goss, who skipped in 3 briers, coached the Gushue team following their Olympic gold and now coaches Team Perry. She and her best friend of 70 years bought tickets to the 2017 Brier at Mile One. They’d get dropped off each morning at 8 and be picked up after the final draw for the day was over except for the Thursday night before the semi finals. I promised them both that I’d take them to the Brier Patch. We had arranged to meet at a certain spot so I could get them across after the Gushue game was over to get a good seat at the patch. Found seats close to the band who were Bic and the ballpoints a great local band. Chardonnay in hand they were both settled for a good night. They danced all night with anyone who asked them. I remember the team from Saskatchewan dressed in their funny costumes and at least 50 years younger wiggled their way to sit next to the 87 year old dancer. Finally at 315 am I looked at. Mom and said I’m calling a cab and going home are you coming. Reluctantly she agreed. She danced all the way out to the music and said to me you know we’re missing great music.
This picture is when Gushue rock stopped and they win the Brier.

Schmirler the Curler

Sandra Schmirler (Schmirler the curler)….She is our favourite curling story. 1998….four years after our family emigrated to this glorious country, we proudly watched the Winter Olympic games held in Nagano for our first time. Coming from a country with a warm climate (We’ve only seen a snippet of snow, once, over a period of 33 years of living there); we had no idea what curling was. Sandra changed that for us. The first time curling for women at the Olympic games was a medal sports; with her as Skip…..team Canada won!! I remember vividly as she, Jan Betker, Joan McCusker and Marcia Gudereit jumped up, hands in the air, laughing, hugging, celebrating on the ice. We did the same in our living room. Through cheers and tears, that was it; we were hooked on this sport! She did it for us. We have not missed one major curling event since.

Watching My Grandson from 4,826 km Away

While I have many curling stories to tell from provincials to Scotties to Briers to Worlds, this most recent one has got to be my favourite in a long time.
My grandson, Smith (age 9), was in a bonspiel in Leduc, Alberta while I am in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. My daughter, Lara, found out the Rec Centre was live streaming this bonspiel so, not only was I able to go back and watch the games I missed but I also got to watch Live his last game. They lost their last game but ended up in third place and winning $20 each!! And Grandpa got to watch it all live and then he FaceTimed me afterwards to chat about the game.

So, while my wife and I have been to many places watching all kinds of curling events (and enjoying Brier Patches including a pool side Brier Patch in Vegas), I think this one had to be my all time favourite so far and I was able to view it from many kilometres away.

Chicken and Wine Spiel

Back in the early 70’s, our small town curling rink with natural ice, hosted many bonspiels. I was only 10 years old then, when our parents were curling in the Chicken and Wine Bonspiel. We hung out at the rink, just waiting for that delivery of KFC from the neighbouring town (about 20 miles away). As kids, we weren’t able to enter in the Bonspiel (entry fee included your Baby Duck and KFC), but our parents purchased extra buckets of chicken for us kids to enjoy. We took it over to my Grandma’s house (she lived right across from the rink), and we enjoyed the delicious meal with Grandma, while our parents were enjoying Baby Duck and KFC at the rink. Back then they had prizes of trophies, and I remember Mom and Dad coming home with a skunk trophy, literally a little statue of a skunk on the trophy base, written on the plaque was “we got skunked at Cupar Chicken and Wine Spiel”. We still had those trophies in Mom and Dad’s trophy case, up until 2 years ago, when we cleaned it out and donated them to charity. Wished we had pictures back then of those days, but those are memories that stick forever.

Great Coaches!!

A group of us curling friends attended the Four Foot Curling Camp in Kelowna in the summer of 2023. I could not believe my luck, Jennifer Jones wasn’t only there (which we weren’t aware of until we arrived!), but I was in a group that had her as our coach for a delivery skill session, and Brent Laing in a workshop with Jenn. My friends were pretty envious of me since they got a different coach. Then in the afternoon, I was fortunate again to have another surprise guest as my coach, Matt Dunstone, on sweeping techniques! Lucky me! Such an awesome experience with those three amazing professional curlers. I learned so much from them, and just love the sport!

My awesome memories!!!

Our daughter and son in law gave myself and her dad tickets for every game at the Mary Brown’s centre in St John’s NL nov/ dec 2024. We travelled from a little town of Lewisporte for a week of excitement but because my husband has a physical disability he was unable to attend all the game so our 18 year old granddaughter ( who has an intellectual disability) was just too eager to attend the games with me. The funniest thing was I said why are you taking sooo many pictures… her answer “I zoom in on them and see who the cutest guys are”. The atmosphere and games were awesome memories and I hope I can attend the Brier in 2026 and take my beautiful granddaughter with me!!! I made some new friends while attending and we still keep in touch… Goid Luck to whoever wins, I’m sure it will be a thrill of a lifetime!!!
